Fared Shafinury & Tehranosaurus: Live at the Historic Cactus Cafe
‘A modern vision of classical Persian music’

Come enjoy the unique sound of Fared Shafinury. With his band, Tehranosaurus, he paints an ancient Persian landscape with a modern indie-Texan touch. Playing in other cities frequently, Tehranosaurus has remained relatively low-key in the Austin music scene, but they always consider it a privilege to take a turn at the Cactus and perform for the hometown crowd.

With the Cactus’ future remaining uncertain, the band is looking forward to this possibly ‘last chance’ at performing at this acoustically-superior and historic local venue. Since their last show in Austin, the band has played in San Francisco’s Palace of Fine Arts, featured in numerous publications such as the Huffington Post and PBS’s Tehran Bureau, and released three new music videos, one of which having gone wildly viral in the youthful Iranian community.

Fared Shafinury returned from Iran to Texas in 2009. He formed Tehranosaurus with five fellow Austin musicians: Jason Mackenzie on tabla, Chris Ledesma on bass and guitar, Emmon Hall on violin, Joey Santori on cello, and drummer Andy Beaudoin. The lineup adds a modern dimension to the Persian classical music, coloring the traditional arrangements with a rock urgency. Most songs adapt verses from Persian poetry, inspired by medieval poets Sa’adi and Hafez and modernist poets such as Furugh Farokhzad and Sohrab Sepehri. Others feature original lyrics, such as the EP track “Arianaz” (view music video).

Austin music blogger, Duggan Flanakin, says Fared’s music, “conveys that sympathy for the human soul — anyone watching the crowd… would know this instinctively. His singing… is just as impassioned as his speaking.” (www.flanfire.com)

Hi everyone! Our member Kim Sadat and friends came to the meeting last night and spoke with you about iFashion. The ICARE organization is raising awareness of issues such as poverty, global immunization, education, and human trafficking by putting on a fashion show that will also function as a platform to discuss these issues.

At this event you will be provided with a stack of sticky notes, which you will use to construct your outfit and then model it on someone. You are allowed to use other materials, however you must use a majority of the sticky notes

There is a change- iFashion will now be held on 4/15 at 6:30pm on campus, and the outfit created for this show is due for approval on 4/14.

If you are interested in participating in this event, please contact an officer as soon as possible. The deadline for signing up for iFashion is 2/28.
